Capstone Spotlight: Patricia Hammet

Over the next few weeks, we will have special blog posts focusing on Senior Capstone Projects. The Capstone cirriculum is unique in that the students design their own course of study. Developed as a way for Grade 12 students to delve deeper into a unit of study, these students go above and beyond what is expected of them in the classroom. They learn discipline, creative thinking, and strategic planning while they brainstorm a project idea, turn their idea into a concrete plan with deadlines and submissions, and execute the project in time for the Capstone Presentation.
After taking a poetry elective the first semester of her junior year, Patricia Hammet fell in love with poetry, and decided to pursue it as a Capstone Project. Initially, she thought her Capstone would be a collection of poems about music. Patricia explains, “I wanted to write poems about music, because I feel that songs can transport you to a memory. Whenever I hear a song, I have very distinct memories that are instantly brought to life.”

After writing a few poems about songs that are meaningful to her, Patricia realized the poems were getting repetitive since the songs followed the same themes of love or loss. To add variety to her collection, Patricia decided to write poems based on the elements (earth, wind, fire, and water) while also incorporating some poems about songs. In the end, she created about 20 poems, each with it’s own drawing or doodle.

On April 6th, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., join Patricia as she shares her poems with the Ensworth Community. Patricia, her family, and her friends will read this collection of poems accompanied by music. Below is a preview of her poem “The Rain Song” based on the song of the same title by Led Zepplin.

"The sun has finally fallen
Through the cracks of the trees.
I flip the sun visor up
And take off the plastic neon sunglasses
I got as a party favor at a bar mitzvah a few weeks ago.
I close my eyes as my dad scans through the stations of static.
I picture how the sand will feel between my toes
And how the scorching rays will feel on my freckled cheeks.
And then
The static disappears..."
