Dontavia Waggoner with Mary Taylor Cowles

Coach Cowles Travels to Cheer on Former Player

Ensworth's head Girls' Basketball coach, Mary Taylor Cowles, traveled to Boston to watch her former player, Dontavia Waggoner '20, play for the Boston College Golden Eagles vs. the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Mary traveled with her two daughters, who are former Ensworth basketball players, and Dean of Academic Support Kate McGlasson.

"Dontavia is the only player I have coached at Ensworth who is playing college basketball that I had not seen play in person," Coach Cowles explains. "So we wanted to go support her." Caroline '17 and Kate '19 Cowles traveled with their mother since they both played on the 2017 State Championship team with Dontavia.

So far, Mary has visited Jordyn Cambridge at Vanderbilt, Kaiya Wynn at Tennessee, Kamil Collier at Lipscomb, Jayda Woods at Trevecca, and Kennedy Cambridge at Kentucky.

After graduating from Ensworth in 2019, Dontavia Waggoner started her college basketball career at NC State before transferring to Boston College. She was a top prospect while at Ensworth, rounding out her career with three State Championships and a Miss Basketball honor.

"Dontavia is so talented and is such a supreme athlete. It was fantastic to watch her in action," Coach Cowles observes. Waggoner finished the game with an overtime victory with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. "She had a great game, and I think she was excited that we came to watch her play," her former coach remembers. "She is also so talented in the classroom and is scheduled to graduate in May! I am so proud of Dontavia!"
