High School Service Learning Day
One of the cornerstones of an Ensworth education is learning how to be contributors to society. This is incorporated through a myriad of projects in each grade; fundraising pennies for Habitat for Humanity, cross-curricular projects that include a service component (like the seventh grade memory project), and service learning days at the High School.
Each quarter, students in Grades 9-12 spend a day giving back to the community. This past Friday, February 10th, our high school students spent the day working on 28 different projects throughout the community. During service learning days, students in Grades 9 and 10 have a more unified approach, with the whole grade studying the same four topics. Students in Grades 11 and 12 have more freedom to learn what they are passionate about, so they can volunteer for a cause near and dear to their hearts.
This year, the overall theme for service learning is sustainability. The Grade 9 students are studying water, land, energy, and food and how these topics relate to sustainability in the community. This past week, some of our ninth grade students worked in Radnor Lake to help re-mulch a walking path, transcribed tombstones, worked at Feed the Children, and helped Hands on Nashville make a home more energy efficient.
Throughout the school year, Grade 10 students are involved in The Special Olympics, a beloved tradition, and study units surrionding community, creativity, and wellness. Last Friday, some tenth grade students volunteered in retirement communities and elementary schools, worked in the “fiber” club where they completed projects related to sewing and knitting, and helped teach a class on healthy eating to elementary-school children.

This past Friday, a group went to Cheatham County Animal Control to volunteer with animals. Another group joined the Grade 10 students in their nutrition class for elementary-school students. With 28 projects this past friday, Quarter Three Service Learning Day was a success! We are excited to see where our students will give their time and talents next quarter.
