reggae silent auction and silent disco for suicide prevention

Senior Turns Personal Tragedy Into Celebration for Hope and Healing

Through a close personal experience with suicide, Ensworth senior Teagan McEver resolved to work toward suicide prevention and support those affected by traumatic death with the Reggae Silent Disco & Silent Auction on Saturday, November 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Percy Warner Golf Course Pavilion.
Her sophomore year, Teagan’s father, Jeff, committed suicide. She and her sisters held an event last year but kept it small. “This year, we are all ready to face our father's death,” McEver explains. “We have organized an event with more structure and more ways to raise money for the two organizations we chose.”

As a ticket to the event, attendees buy a t-shirt online from either the Buddy Project or Living Forward, two charities hand-picked by Teagan. The Buddy Project is a well-known suicide prevention non-profit. “The Living Forward Foundation,” McEver describes, “is a new project developed by Haley Arias who lost her father to suicide as well. She wanted to provide help to all the kids who have also been affected through support groups and retreats.”

Since suicide has been called “the silent epidemic,” Teagan decided to make all parts of the night relate to that idea, including a silent auction and a silent disco, a new phenomenon where partygoers dance to music that plays through headphones. Since her father was a fan of Jamaica and reggae music, the evening’s music and food will be Jamaican-themed.

Service Learning is incorporated into the curriculum at every grade level, with seniors ending their time at Ensworth with an individual project. While the event is related to Teagan's senior service learning project, this is not an Ensworth-sponsored event.
