Thomas Doochin, '12 Pivots Charity to Help Kids

Thomas Doochin, 2012 graduate of Ensworth, has shifted the focus and changed the name of the company he founded while a student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Formerly known as CommuniGift, Daymaker connects parents and kids with needy kids to give them gifts around occasions like birthdays, holidays, and back-to-school.

About the shift, Doochin explained, "We felt like [CommuniGift] no longer fit who we wanted to be. We wanted a brand that kids could get really excited about (and pronounce)!"

Apart from helping brighten a child's day, Daymaker also gets children excited about helping others.

Thomas explained, "A majority of parents say that kindness and generosity are the most important values they hope to instill in their kids."

By giving young people a deeply personal and tangible way of giving to their peers, Daymaker hopes to make this a springboard for future giving. The impact is already being felt. Thomas reports that over 10,000 kids and parents from all 50 states have purchased items for kids from over 150 non-profits.

Doochin's road to the non-profit world started with Ensworth's Service Learning program. He explains, "Our service through Ensworth was powerful because it contextualized the work we were doing." He credits mentors such as Mr. Whitfield and Mrs. Hubert with stressing "based on what you have been given, it is your duty to find a way to create an opportunity for those without."

Although not yet for Nashville charities, Thomas urges everyone to check out Daymaker's giving opportunities for the holidays
