Faculty Five with Mrs. Moeller

This week, get to know our second grade teacher and veggiecation expert, Mrs. Moeller.
What camp are you running this summer (or week)?
This week, I am running Veggiecation Camp. It builds on our second grade Veggiecation curriculum which introduces our students to various vegetables. At camp, we have time to go more in-depth experimenting with vegetables in cooking and in some crafts.

What is your favorite summertime activity?
My favorite summer activity is hanging out with my extended family on the beach near my childhood home.

What do you hope campers learn this summer?
I hope that my campers take away an autonomy with preparing their own food. A lot of our recipes are very simple and we try them again and again - tweaking to our own tastes as we go. I think it is empowering to realize that you can make food in a way that is most appealing to your own tastes.

Do you have a favorite summer memory?
My favorite summer memories involve lots of clams and oysters, corn on the cob, and tomatoes and basil with my family and friends. Clearly food is central to my happy moments! I hope that the little foodies in my camp are developing their own happy food memories, too.

If you could go on a summer vacation anywhere, where would you go? Why?
In the summer there is no place I would rather be than at my family's beach home on Long Island. It is beautiful there, but most importantly, it is home for me. My mother spent her childhood there, as did I, and I am so happy to share it with my own boys. We are surrounded by our cousins and old friends and it feels nostalgic and perfect there.
