Extracurricular Ideas Marinate at the High School

Each year, students create club-like activity groups that are interest-led and community-inspired. One such student organization is a group of high schoolers interested in cooking.
Peter Darst '24 and Harry Phillips '24 share the story of a summer trip to Monteagle during COVID the summer after eighth grade. They began cooking together, and the idea for this student organization began. During their Freshman year, the idea continued to take root, and as Juniors, their dream became a reality.

Peter and Harry wanted to be leaders, share their passion, and do great things with it. Alongside their faculty sponsor, Mary Catherine Bradshaw (who they deem an amazing asset to have on their team), these two have rallied more than 30 students to this group that meets every few weeks. Their first guest was Chopped chef Mindy Merrell, who shared a lesson on biscuits. She brought in four kinds of biscuits and talked about type and style.

With only 30 minutes in the time before first period, actual cooking can be a challenge, so having prepared food with a lesson has worked. The take-home, however, is where the true magic begins. Students are then encouraged to go home and try what they are learning and share their passion for cooking with the group throughout the month.

Next Wednesday, they will host The Cake Doctor, Ann Byrn.
