High School Artist Wins National Award

As we return from break, we always look forward to the announcement of National Award winners from the Scholastics Art and Writing competition.
Owen Shaffer ‘22 has been named a recipient of the American Vision Medal and Gold Medal winner! Owen has been recognized for his astrophotography and the image Heart Nebula, for which he has spent years investigating the process and techniques of photographing deep space.

Since 1923, the Awards have celebrated teen artists and writers from across the country. Owen joins the ranks of notable alumni, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol—all of whom won Scholastic Awards when they were teens.

The American Vision Medal is given to the artist whose work most exemplifies originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. From the pool of Regional nominees, an esteemed panel of jurors in New York City then selects artists from each region to receive an American Visions Medal. Two students from Tennessee received the American Vision Medal, and 93 National recipients total (the U.S. and British Columbia). Less than 2,000 students were awarded the National Gold Medals; winners represent the top 1% of all competitors.
