A Statement from David Braemer, Head of School

David Braemer, Head of School, addresses the Ensworth community about recent events and the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Dear Ensworth Community,

There are three core statements that define the identity and guide the efforts of Ensworth; our Mission, our Vision, and our Statement on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Our commitment to the ideals expressed in these statements is unquestioned, and as our nation faces the continued challenges of racism and civil unrest, exacerbatedby a global pandemic,our efforts to actively strive toward the realization of these ideals are more important than ever. We must do more than just condemn events of overt racism such as thehorrific killing of George Floyd. We must actively strive to create a community that instills the values of equity and justice. This is something that we remain committed to doing as a school.

When the Board of Trustees unanimously approved our statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, it was done with great intentionality, and with the understanding that we would be doing a disservice to the school community, as well as to the greater community, if we did not make this a priority. This statement is more than aspirational, it is a call to action that is very clear in its purpose:

In order to realize the goals of our Mission and Vision, Ensworth must actively strive to be a diverse and inclusive community of learners that engages collectively In Search of Truth. The presence of different perspectives and life experiences plays a vital role in the development of our students, enhancing classroom and extracurricular experiences in meaningful ways. As a school, we are committed to cultivating an environment in which all members of the Ensworth community experience a true sense of belonging and are empowered to be active participants in the life of the school. These efforts are essential if we are to foster the growth of all students in line with their potential, and to equip them for lives of purpose that extend far beyond their time at Ensworth.

There is plenty of work to be done and, as a school community, we remain steadfast in our commitment to doing this work.
