Calling Caldecott the River

Announcing the Winner of the 3rd Robin Smith Book Award

The River, written and illustrated by Caldecott-winning author Elisha Cooper, has won the third annual Robin Smith Book Award, named after the late and beloved Ensworth teacher, Robin Smith.
Robin’s husband and fellow Ensworth teacher, Dean Scheider, made the announcement on the Calling Caldecott blog

The publisher describes The River: “In Cooper's flowing prose and stunning watercolor scenes, readers can follow a traveler's trek down the Hudson River as she and her canoe explore the wildlife, flora and fauna, and urban landscape at the river's edge. Through perilous weather and river rushes, the canoe and her captain survive and maneuver their way down the river back home.”

“For several summers, our family vacationed on the New York side of Lake Champlain,” writes Mr. Scheider, “So we knew the Adirondack region and the vistas depicted in the book, and, like Elisha Cooper, we paddled around a lake in Maine when we spent time there. Robin would have loved feeling a part of the place Cooper celebrates.”

Part of The Horn Book Magazine, the oldest magazine dedicated to reviewing children’s literature, “Calling Caldecott” discusses the prestigious Randolph Caldecott Medal that recognizes “the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.” Robin and Dean have both served on the Caldecott Award Selection Committee.
