Tigers Flex Competitive Muscle at State Championships

On a sunlit day in the rocky hills surrounding St. Andrews-Sewanee School, Ensworth mountain bikers finished their season at the TN-NICA State Championships. Leading the charge was Samuel Mayer, ’23, who finished 4th in the Freshman Boys division and 5th overall for the 2019 Race Series. Fellow 9th grader Hunter Haney, ’23, finished 13th in this race, but placed 11th for the year. Sophomore Spencer Linn, ’22, who was dogged last season by mechanical breakdowns, raced trouble-free to a 45th place finish at Sewanee, and ended the season in 56th place after competing in only two races this season. Sara Daugherty, ’21, rode to 11th place in the JV Girls division, and ended her season in 12th place overall. Team Captain William Vreeland, ’21, competing in the vast (84 riders!) JV Boys division, worked his way to 18th place, and finished 19th in the series standings. Joining him in this division were Malcolm Bryan, ’20, who finished 61st at Sewanee and 64th for the season, and Nicholas Guma, ’21, who finished 64th in his first-ever mountain biking race.

In only its second year of existence, the Ensworth Mountain Biking team competed in four of the five 2019 Race Series events, but put in enough strong performances all season to stand 18th overall in Tennessee. Congratulations to all the Tiger riders for their efforts this year!
