Ensworth Is Spreading Kindness Prior to Leon Logothetis’ Visit

In anticipation of best-selling author and Netflix star, Leon Logothetis’ visit, an emphasis on kindness has been spreading through Ensworth’s entire K-12 curriculum.
Mr. Logothetis visits Ensworth on Tuesday, October 29. He will meet with students on the Red Gables Campus during the day and then give a community-wide presentation at 6:30 p.m. in the Ingram Arts Center Theater on the Frist Campus.

Mr. Logothetis gave up a life as a broker in London and left it all for an inspirational life on the road. He began his crusade for kindness by journaling his journey “to circumnavigate the globe on a vintage motorbike fueled by kindness,” resulting in the publication of his best-selling book,  The Kindness Diaries, which was adapted into a hit Netflix series in 2017.

Dr. Ellen Reynolds, Ensworth’s Director of Counseling and Learning Services, and Shari Harjo, Learning Specialist and K-4 Counselor, have been focusing on kindness in their Kindergarten through Grade 8 Life classes. The curriculum particularly focuses on Logothetis’ recent book Go Be Kind, a practical book about “rediscovering the greatest human gift—kindness, which inspires interpersonal connection and is the most rewarding way to lead a more magnificent life.”

Here are just a few of the ways Ensworth has incorporated kindness:

  • Grade 5 is currently embarking on 28½ adventures in kindness from Go Be Kind, which includes creating a poster featuring ways others have shown them kindness and assembling “calming bags” for Lower School students for when they feel sad or anxious.
  • Grade 8 Life is watching the Netflix series and working on how to be empathetic listeners and communicators and using the examples in the show to work on their relationships with others. They will also be painting “kindness rocks” to hide around campus as a surprise for observant schoolmates.
  • In grades K-3, Shari Harjo’s lessons have included books on kindness, which Dr. Reynolds observes, “fit so well with the Responsive Classroom Model where students have a classroom set of expectations.”
  • The theme of this year’s Talent Show was The Kindness Diaries series with a VW yellow bug and between each act, the captains highlighted the service learning projects our students do to spread kindness in the greater Nashville community.
  • The Life team has spread quotes about kindness around the school and all of the quotes have been assembled on a bulletin board in the Grade 7 hallway to make the word “KIND.”
In addition, all K-8 homerooms and advisories are creating a physical “Chain of Kindness” that will connect the entire Red Gables Campus prior to Logothetis’ visit.

Leon Logothetis’ visit is free and open to the public. Join us in the Ingram Arts Center on the Frist Campus on Tuesday, October 29 at 6:30 p.m.
