Ensworth Announces New Head of High School

After conducting an extensive national search, Ensworth is excited to announce that Nowell Hesse will be the new Head of High School beginning Summer 2019.
Hesse is currently the Head of Upper School at the Isidore Newman School, a nationally recognized, coeducational pre-K through twelfth-grade independent school in New Orleans. During his sixteen years as an educator at Newman, Hesse has held a number of significant roles including Chair of the Science Department, Director of Technology, and for the past seven years, Head of Upper School. In addition to his administrative roles, Hesse has taught physics at both the regular and Advanced Placement levels and has coached boys' and girls' soccer, football, and track at the middle and high school levels.

Hesse graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from the Honors Program at the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Genetics/Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and he earned his Masters of Education in Independent School Leadership from Vanderbilt University.

Hesse replaces David Morgan, Ensworth’s founding Head of High School and Associate Head of School, who has served in his role since 2002 and helped establish the high school’s curriculum and programs. Morgan announced his plans to step down last fall.

Head of School David Braemer states, “Throughout the search process, Nowell impressed people with his thoughtfulness, his depth of understanding of a school like Ensworth, and his commitment to the development of relationships with students, faculty, parents, and administration. I am confident he will help us to build upon the tremendous foundation set by David Morgan over the past seventeen years and to continue to strive toward the realization of the ideals of our Mission and Vision in an inclusive, intentional manner.”
