"People" : A Message from the Head of School

David Braemer, Head of School
Independent school education is a highly personal, relational enterprise. With that being the case, this edition of Ensights focuses on the most important aspect of Ensworth, its people. From the variety of contexts in which the members of this community interact, to the range of perspectives and experiences that these individuals bring to the table, it is our people who make this school such a special place.
Recognizing the importance of people, the Board of Trustees engaged in a great deal of conversation during the past school year about how to continue to create an environment that allows the members of our community to more fully realize their talents. Two major outcomes of these discussions were the creation of a Board Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the reinforced commitment to the development of a new Lower School building. Both represent important initiatives that will significantly enhance personal and educational experiences at Ensworth.

The Board felt strongly that, in order to meet our obligation to the members of our school community, it is essential that we are a welcoming environment that embraces the value of diversity and its importance as a catalyst to the realization of our goals as a school. The Board’s effort to develop and approve a statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is an important step in this direction, as it clearly articulates certain ideals that have always been part of the Ensworth experience. In doing so, this statement creates a formal touch point that will guide our efforts going forward. More information and the full text of the statement can be found on page 12 of this issue.

In regards to a new Lower School building, the third phase of our Excellence Begins with E Campaign, the Board is affirming its commitment to ensuring that Ensworth provides the best possible experience at this critical developmental level. The foundation established in Lower School sets our students on a path to success that will extend far beyond their time at Ensworth. New and enhanced learning spaces will facilitate even greater collaboration among our students and allow our exceptional faculty to personalize a child’s education with even greater efficacy. As a result of this project, we will be in the best position possible to help students and faculty use their talents to the fullest.

As a school, we must never lose sight of the fact that people are Ensworth’s most important resource. Maximizing the potential of this resource requires a multi-faceted approach. It is a privilege to work with a Board and to be part of a community that recognizes this dynamic and is willing to take action in ways that benefit people now and in the future.
