2022 Ensworth K-12 Chess Championship

130 students participated in the 2022 Ensworth K-12 Chess Championship, which served as the 3rd and final qualifying event for the 2023 Nashville K-12 City Championship and was sponsored by the Nashville Chess Center and the Predators Foundation.
Ensworth did not disappoint on their home turf!

In the K-1 Division, Holden Hutzel turned in a perfect 5-0 score for 1st Place! He will represent our Tigers in January at the City Championship. His teammate Oliver Dale missed out on qualification in 3rd Place, and Evan Lippman rounded out this team that brought home the 1st Place Team Trophy (notching Harding Academy by only a half point).

In the K-3 Section, our Ensworth Team brought home the 2nd Place Team Trophy. Lee Levine and Guy Ryerson tied for 7th Place overall. Allison Naftel tied for 18th, and Sahil Patel played up an age group to join this squad since he had already previously qualified in the K-1 Division.

In the K-5 Group, Kip Keyser and Syon Mathur brought home the 3rd Place Team Award.

In the K-12 High School Division, Senior Owen Irving came out of retirement (not having played a chess tournament since April 2019) to turn in a perfect 5-0 score and stamp his ticket to the 2023 High School City Championship. Sadly, he had no teammates and did not qualify for the team award.

In the Unrated Section (for new players), Niam Mathur and Madeline Grace Dale barely missed out on a team award finishing in 5th Place together, but they fought hard, learned a lot, and represented their schools well in one of their first chess events.
