Author Visits Fourth Grade Classrooms Remotely

Maureen Sherry, author of Walls within Walls—a Grade 4 favorite—virtually visited all four homerooms to tell the children about the inspiration and ideas behind her books.
Sherry visited Ensworth in person in 2010 soon after Walls within Walls came out. Through connections in Ms. Earhart’s class, the author was able to join each homeroom via Zoom on January 28.

Growing up and living in various apartments around New York, Maureen became fascinated with the living history of homes and the unique people that inhabit them. When she and her family were moving out of one house, she decided to create a time capsule and seal it up in a wall for future inhabitants to find. The imagination surrounding this idea became the genesis of Walls within Walls.

In Walls within Walls, a group of children move into a new apartment. The publisher describes the plot: “The original owner, the deceased multimillionaire Mr. Post, long ago turned the apartment itself into a giant puzzle containing a mysterious book and hidden panels—a puzzle that, with some luck, courage, and brainpower, will lead to discovering the Post family fortune.”

As Sherry was working from home with her own children who are learning remotely, Grade 4 was thankful for the opportunity to meet and ask questions of a best-selling author.
