Students Creatively Combine Service and Art

J.C. Johnson, High School Visual Arts Teacher, has been leading trips to Turnip Green Creative Reuse on quarterly high school Service Learning Days. Their work has led to the creation of a unique art exhibition.
The non-profit combines environmentalism and creativity by partnering with artists, schools, teachers, and businesses to breathe new life into old, unwanted or damaged items that would normally be thrown away.

Johnson and her students decided to create an original exhibition to raise money for Turnip Green by searching for materials and resources to create original art. Pieces were created from abandoned artwork, expired photographic paper, cigar box pinhole cameras, cassette tapes, cardboard, and more. Each piece was created with the intention of making something new and valuable from items that otherwise may be discarded or end up in a landfill.

Twenty pieces, each created specifically for this exhibition, are on display at Turnip Green’s Green Gallery at EastSide Station located at 805 Woodland Street in East Nashville. 100% of art sales go to Turnip Green Creative Reuse and their mission.
