Encore is our contemporary a cappella group. This is an auditioned group that is very fast-paced and in which all singers must be comfortable soloing and singing on individual hand-held microphones with staging. This group focuses on contemporary a cappella arrangements in genres such as pop, jazz, R&B, blues, funk, and similar styles. Encore has an extensive performance, recording, and rehearsal schedule with after-school rehearsals closer to performances. This group is an advanced ensemble, and there are limited spots available each year. A few finalists may be called back after the group auditions if needed.

Submission Process

DUE SUNDAY MAY 11
AUDITION DATES: Monday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 13 in Ingram Arts Center 
TIME: 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. (Monday by time sign-up, Tuesday is the full block of time)
Callback Date (if needed): Wednesday, May 14th in Ingram Arts Center, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

The Encore Audition process consists of two parts:

Part One  - Individual Vocal Assessment (May 12)

• You will be scheduled on May 12 to come in for an individual vocal assessment. This sign-up will be scheduled as you submit your audition form online and validated with you via email the weekend of May 10 and 11. In this assessment, Ms. Carter will lead you through a few vocal exercises to determine your range, and you will perform your 2 prepared songs. This will be performed for a panel of adjudicators. 
   
• You will sing a verse and chorus of two contemporary  (pop, rock, R&B, etc.) songs of your choice (verse and chorus) that best demonstrate your tone, technique, and musicality. Songs should be contrasting in style (e.g. one ballad and one upbeat, etc.). Please do not sing Broadway or classical songs for this audition. Songs must be performed a cappella (without accompaniment).

Anyone interested in vocal percussion may include a short sample of your vocal percussion abilities.

• If you are auditioning for BOTH Chamber Singers and Encore (Double Choir), you will perform one pop song of your choice, and use “Sing We and Chant It” as your second song. You will perform a section of the song in your preferred voice part over this recording. The audition excerpt (section) will be shared at auditions on May 12. 

Part Two - Group Audition (May 13)

• You will be provided learning tracks for an Encore arrangement on Friday, May 9 that you should memorize by the audition date. 
   
• During the group audition, you will be asked to sing with current members of Encore and the other auditionees in different configurations of singers to assess blend and overall preparedness.
   
• You will then shadow an Encore member to learn staging for a section of the group song to assess how quickly you can learn staging and what your stage presence looks like.
   
• You will have an opportunity to sing one of your solo choices in front of the other auditionees and Encore if you would like. This is not required, but it's always fun to share what everyone has prepared.
