IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR GRADES 5-8

• Players will need: shorts, t-shirt, cleats, mouthpiece (helmets will be provided)
• Football drop-off and pickup will take place in the gravel parking lot nearest the field at Red Gables. Enter through the lower entrance to the Brown Athletic Center. The lot will be on your right. For pickup, parents should remain in their cars.
• Parents are not permitted to stay on campus during practices, clinics, or camps.

The mountain bike team will host an instructional ride for students in Grades 5-12 to learn the foundational skills. Students without prior experience are encouraged to attend to develop the skills to ride safely and confidently over the summer and when the season starts in August. These rides will take place at the Percy Warner Park Trailhead on Saturday, May 16, from 8:30-10:00 a.m.

An email with details will be sent to existing riders. Please invite friends and family interested in supporting Ensworth Mountain Biking. To be added to our mailing list, please email mageed@ensworth.com.

Student & adult riders who want to ride more consistently with the team will need to complete NICA waivers. If you are interested, please let me know, and I will invite you to the NICAPitzone to complete the process. Information regarding summer rides, training plans, and the fall NICA race series will be posted in May. We hope to see you on the trails!  

Summer Base Training Plan: Riders should train over the summer to comfortably ride 90 minutes on single-track trails at a moderate pace by early August. This preparation will help build confidence for training toward their first race on Sunday, August 30.

Team Training: Team training rides will begin the first week of August on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:00-5:45 p.m. We will meet at the Golf Course parking lot in Percy Warner Park (1221 Forest Park Dr., Nashville, 37205). 

Fall Race Series: The 14th annual Tennessee Interscholastic Cycling League Race Series will commence on August 30, 2026. For the full schedule of races for riders in grades 6-12, please check the Tennessee NICA Website.

Kindly note that if you do not attend the previous tryouts, you will not have the opportunity to compete against most students who tried out during the earlier tryout dates. 

Important Details
Players must attend the first day of tryouts (August 10) to be considered for both Varsity and JV. Not all players will be required to attend every day of tryouts, just the players we call back. It will depend on their performance each day. Some players may need one day, two days, or all three days.

We encourage players to be match-ready, with a basic understanding of how to keep score and maintain a rally. Many of our Varsity and JV players have experience competing in USTA/UTR tournaments, whether at Ensworth or other venues, and actively participate in clinics and year-round tennis play.

The coaching staff will determine the number of players selected for each roster. 

• Varsity teams will practice Monday-Thursday, 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. 
• JV teams will practice on Monday/Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
• Once the academic year begins, transportation will be provided from Red Gables to the Tennis Center at Frist Campus.
• For safety reasons, parents are expected to park and come inside to pick students up from the Tennis Center at 5:00 p.m. 
• Please note that there will be no returning bus to the Red Gables campus after practice.

If your child is still working on consistency with rallying and typically isn’t able to sustain rallies of more than 5-10 balls, these teams might not be the best fit at this time. Similarly, if your child has only recently started taking lessons, it might be helpful to consider whether these teams align with their current level of play. VOLLEYBALL SUMMER CAMP (Grades 5–8, Girls)

Ensworth Head Volleyball Coach Ashley Glotta and staff lead a camp focused on technique and fundamentals for athletes at the middle school level. The camp will focus on all volleyball positions and include drills and competitions during the camp week. Athletes will leave with a better understanding of volleyball at the basic level and learn some advanced skills in their specific positions. The Ensworth volleyball coaching staff has experience coaching and playing at the high school and collegiate level. Participants should wear shorts or spandex, knee pads, and bring athletic shoes.

Football cheer will build school spirit, practice teamwork, and build confidence. Cheerleaders energize the crowd, support their peers, and develop skills by learning chants, short routines, and some introductory stunting. It’s a fun, athletic way to foster friendships and school pride to start the year. An additional season of cheer will take place in the winter for basketball. These are two separate teams, and participation in one does not mean participation in both. 

Football Cheer Practice and Schedule Information:

• The first official Football Cheer practice will be Tuesday, July 28 from 3:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. 
• The team will practice every Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the Early Fall Season from 3:00- 4:30 p.m.  
• The team will cheer at all home, Varsity, Middle School games and post-season championships, expected to be on Thursday evenings. 

There will be no cuts from this team, and those who choose to participate must attend all practices and games unless excused by the coach.  Cheerleaders are required to attend summer clinics and practices if they are in town. The first game will be on Thursday, August 13.

Transportation: Students will be transported by bus to the natatorium. Parent pickup is at the natatorium at 4:45 p.m. (There is no returning bus to Red Gables)

YEARBOOK APPRENTICE

Yearbook Apprentice is an after-school club designed for students interested in contributing to the creation of the school yearbook while developing foundational skills in photography, writing, and design. Club members will work alongside the yearbook advisor and student editors to brainstorm themes, write captions and short articles, take photos at school events, and learn the basics of layout and visual storytelling. This is a great opportunity for students who want to get creative, collaborate with peers, and take pride in capturing the spirit and memories of the school year. No prior experience is required—just curiosity, a commitment to learning, and a willingness to learn. 

Swimming

Days: Monday–Friday
Time: 3:30–4:30 p.m.

Transportation: Students will be transported by bus to the natatorium. Parent pickup is at the natatorium at 4:45 p.m. (There is no returning bus to Red Gables)

Please note: Students participating in basketball may not participate in swimming and diving.

Time: 3:00–4:30 p.m. OR 4:30–6:00 p.m. (Teams practicing at 4:30 p.m. will have a supervised study hall after school.)

Any Grade 6 boy may participate. After tryouts, players will be divided into A and B teams.

Grades 7 & 8 Boys Basketball
Days: Monday–Friday
Any Grade 7 or 8 boy may try out. After tryouts, players will be divided into two teams. Cuts may be necessary due to limited roster space.

Please note: Students are expected to attend all practices and games. Students participating in swimming and diving, cheerleading, the winter play, STEM, or robotics may not participate in basketball. 

Cheerleading

Grades 6-8 Basketball Cheer
Season: Practices will begin on Monday, November 30
Time: 3:00-4:30pm
Basketball cheer will build school spirit, practice teamwork, and build confidence. Cheerleaders energize the crowd, support their peers, and develop skills by learning chants, short routines, and some introductory stunting. It’s a fun, athletic way to foster friendships and school pride. This group will cheer at varsity girls and boys home games.

Any student in Grades 6-8 may participate with no cuts. Students may not participate in cheer and another winter sport (basketball and swim) They must attend every practice and game unless excused by the coach.

CHESS CLUB
Welcome to Middle School Chess Club! Join us every Tuesday during SIP (Supplemental Instructional Period) for an engaging session of strategic thinking and friendly competition. This club provides a fantastic opportunity for students to develop critical thinking skills while enjoying the game of chess. To participate, parents must register their children.

FORTE
Elevate your voice and join the harmonious melodies of the Forte Acapella Ensemble at Ensworth! This captivating vocal group welcomes middle school students passionate about music to explore the rich tradition of acapella singing. Led by skilled instructors, participants delve into intricate vocal arrangements, master dynamic harmonies, and refine their performance skills through rehearsals and live performances. From classic ballads to contemporary hits, Forte Acapella Ensemble offers a platform for students to showcase their talent, creativity, and passion for music in a supportive and collaborative environment.  This is an audition group.

Ensworth Middle School's Strength and Conditioning program offers students an engaging way to build strength, improve agility, and develop overall fitness in a supportive environment. Led by experienced coaches, this after-school activity emphasizes proper technique, functional movement, and age-appropriate exercises to enhance athletic performance and physical health. Through a mix of fun, high-energy workouts and team-building activities, students gain confidence in their abilities while learning lifelong fitness habits. This program is open to all students interested in fitness, whether they’re looking to improve in sports or simply stay active and strong. Students must sign up for specific days they plan to attend. 

MODERN MUSIC COLLECTIVE

Join the Modern Music Collective—a creative space for middle school musicians who love contemporary music. Whether you play guitar, bass, drums, keys, horns, or sing, this ensemble brings together students to collaborate, arrange, and perform songs from pop, rock, indie, jazz, R&B, and more. You'll sharpen your musicianship, learn the art of playing in a band, and have the chance to showcase your work at school events. Open to players of all levels who are eager to grow, work as a team, and make great music together.

Depending on participation numbers, teams will be divided into Varsity & Junior Varsity. Per conference rules, Grade 5 students may only participate in JV games. Home field is at Red Gables.

• Students still participating in basketball tournaments and the winter play will fulfill their obligation before beginning spring sports
• Students participating in other after-school activities cannot join a spring sports team as attendance at practices and games is required

•  One sport or one sport plus track and field
   
• Students choosing this option are required to:
  • Choose a primary sport as a priority over the other when conflicts arise
  • Attend practice for their primary sport unless they’re attending a track and field meet and have communicated with their primary sport’s coach
  •  Attend morning track and field workouts
  • Practices and games are after school at various locations - coaches will provide team schedules
  • Practices and games are outdoors so be sure to bring appropriate clothing each day, including sweatshirts, sweatpants, hats, gloves, etc.
  • Because spring weather is especially unpredictable, coaches will make every effort to inform families about practice and game changes and/or cancellations by 1 p.m. each day
