Years of Service
“Time passes so quickly—I'll start my 29th year at Ensworth in August. There has always been a service learning component to education here. When I started, the 4th grade was responsible for a paper drive. Parents would bring in papers to a big truck in front, then we'd turn them in for money.”
“Then I heard that the Harris-Hillman school, which helps handicapped children, wanted volunteers. Our initial idea was for the kids to form groups and create dances to popular music, in a radio show format. It's always great fun—the Ensworth kids are amazing, and the Harris-Hillman kids love it, too.”
“Over the years, we've been asked to come back more and more throughout the year. We go ice skating with them in the winter—our kids push the wheelchairs around the rink, and everyone has a great time—and in the spring, we help out with the Special Olympics carnival. The art teacher at Harris-Hillman also loved what we were doing so much that she started an arts and music festival and asked us to help out by taking the kids around to do all the different activities.”
“For me, beginning these personal relationships that continue from year to year—with Harris-Hillman and the students there—makes all the difference.”
